Mr Gibb was able to share some words in French but admitted his limited knowledge of the language meant he soon had to revert to English.

He was pleased to learn the group's conversation is at all levels of French proficiency, from beginners right through to fluency.

Meetings are held at the library on Friday mornings, 10am to 11.30am, and members share coffee and croissants, as well as conversation in French.

Mr Gibb said: "It was a real pleasure to meet members of the French conversation group. Although my French is very much schoolboy O-level standard, we did manage a few simple exchanges in French before retreating to English.

"We had an interesting brief discussion about Europe and Brexit, as well as one or two local issues. It’s a very social and welcoming group and I would recommend joining for those who want to learn or perfect their French. Bon chance!”
