WORTHING OUT-GUN SCOTTISH AGAIN

AHEAD OF their trip to National League side Redruth in the Powergen Cup second round on Saturday, Worthing won at London Scottish for the second consecutive week.

It is the first time since 1999 that Scottish have lost two matches in a row.

Coach Mick Orton said: "Our first half performance was weak, but a lot of that was down to how well Scottish played.

"We had some serious talking at half-time and the boys came out and did what was necessary. The boys stood up to be counted in the second half and performed well as a team."

Worthing were put on the backfoot from the off with some ferocious tackling from the Scottish back row and centres, and did not enjoy the space they had the previous week.

Worthing struck first, though, when Scottish were penalised for not releasing the ball in the tackle. Worthing fullback Ben Coulson converted the penalty. His impressive kicking ended up winning the match for Worthing.

Scottish levelled, after Worthing's Louis Kirchell was sinbinned for offside. Mike Fraser converted the penalty. Fraser put Scottish ahead with another penalty, before Worthing conceded their first try of the season.

Fraser Smeaton scored after a fine break by Jerry Costeloe. Worthing then exerted some pressure on and pinned Scottish in their 22 before Coulson converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

After the restart, Worthing put Scottish under pressure, and Coulson scored another penalty to pull the score back to 11-9.

With 16 minutes left, Worthing were ahead when Rowan O'Gorman took a catch and drove from the five metre line to get the try. Coulson converted, and Worthing continued their dominance.

Smeaton was sinbinned for failing to release the ball, and Coulson converted his fourth penalty to give Worthing a 19-11 lead with just three minutes left.

Scottish pushed forward and got a late try through Paul Byford, but Worthing held on, with their excellent team-spirit evident again.

On Saturday's trip to Redruth, Orton said: "If we have got aspirations of playing at National 3 level, then Saturday is going to be a good test to see where we are at."
