Waller on target in Team GB water polo opener

JACK Waller scored for the Team GB water polo team in their opening match of London 2012.

The 22-year-old who hails from the village of Catsfield grabbed the final goal of the night but was unable to prevent the British men from slipping to a 13-4 defeat against Romania.

Both sides had chances early on but it was the Romanians who opened the scoring three minutes into the first period. They doubled their lead before Craig Figes converted a penalty.

Romania were very much on top in the second quarter as they added a further four goals to make the half time score 6-1.

Rob Parker struck twice in quick succession to reduce the deficit to 9-3 at the end of the third period only for the Romanians to add another four before Waller rounded off the scoring.

Team GB are due to face Serbia tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6.20pm before taking on the United States, Hungary and Montenegro.

This was the first time Team GB had competed in the water polo at Olympic level since the Melbourne Games of 1956.
