Reigning two-time champions Roffey made it four straight wins - excluding the abandonment against their rivals last month - as they closed out a two-wicket victory against Cuckfield on Saturday.

And with Horsham’s shock defeat to relegation- threatened Brighton & Hove, Roffey narrowed the gap on them at the summit.

Matt Davies’ side moved to within ten points of the Lions with their game against the Sussex Development XI still in hand.

It has brought a dramatic swing as James Johnson’s side had a 45-point lead for much of June and a 54-point one over Roffey - but with plenty of cricket left to play, the race is far from over.

Davies said: “We are in a good place and where we want to be with a game in hand. Obviously Horsham slipped up on Saturday, but a lot of sides, including ourselves, have got to watch out.

“Brighton beat Horsham and they are down the bottom, so anyone can beat anyone. Every game is massive and everyone is playing for something regardless of position. We would like to be top at this stage, but second with a game in hand is a good place to be.

“The mood is a little bit more buoyant, but at the same time every Saturday, regardless of our league position everyone wants to go out and win. That’s the attitude whether we are 50 points behind or ten points behind.

“It’s nice to look at us moving up the table, but we are winning games of cricket and that’s what everyone wants to do.”

Horsham face another tough task at the weekend as they host Preston Nomads at Cricketfield Road, while Roffey are at Horntye Park, where they face Hastings & St Leonards Priory.
