The rout of Romford!

"QUITE SIMPLY, the best result in the history of Worthing United Football Club."

That was chairman Gary Downie's assessment of his side's incredible FA Cup victory over an Essex Premier League side Romford in indifferent league form. It landed 3,750 and the scalp of the club who, admittedly way back in 1880, were quarter-finalists.

A stunning opening 23 minutes was all it took for United to kill the tie. Joe Shelley, Gavin Geddes and Warren Levy all took advantage of the visitors' generous defending to put the Mavericks three up and send their biggest home crowd wild.

United's cause was hugely aided by some woeful Romford defensive play. In a first half where United looked as if they were going to score with every attack, Levy also hit the bar with a point-blank header while Romford's Andy Oxby's dipping 30-yarder in reply came back off the post.
