Sussex Champs No 5!

IT WASN'T exactly the wind they expected but it did nicely. Worthing capitalised emphatically on their advantage of playing their golf on exposed coastal downland when a north easterly '” not the prevailing south westerly '” blew in on Saturday morning.

They knew Copthorne, used to more sheltered inland conditions, would prefer calm. That's rarely on the Littlehampton links course menu and Worthing showed up at 7am to acclimatise with practice before the 8.45am tee-off.

The fillip helped Worthing sail into lunch with all four matches of foursomes in the locker and Copthorne were as good as being Davy Jones in the scenario.

A 4-0 deficit was the Ancient Mariner's nightmare come true for Copthorne and only one of their number prevented Worthing marching into a winning 7-0.

Paul Oliver needed all 18 holes to deny Yorkshireman Keith Hale in the first singles out after lunch but by then their competitive bulldog Joe Doherty was already victorious in the clubhouse (5-0).
