Sidley secure memorable win

SIDLEY United defied the absence of several first team regulars to pull off a memorable and unexpected 2-1 victory at much-fancied Three Bridges on Saturday.

Bridges were second favourites to land the Sussex Division One title at the start of the campaign and won their opening two matches. But United turned the form book upside down with a rousing display full of character to deservedly emerge with all three points.

Joint manager Andy Laskey said: "That was a terrific result really considering we had a lot of players out. I think we had six if not seven out in the end but it does show the depth of the squad. The commitment the boys who came in showed was brilliant.

"It was a funny game. Within about 10 minutes of the second half we could have been 3-0 down but we could have won four or five-one in the end. When we equalised you just knew we were going to win. Even their manager Sammy Donnelly said to Pete (joint manager Peter Heritage) afterwards that we deserved it."

Goalkeeper James Duffell pulled off a pair of trademark agile stops early on but was finally beaten on 35 minutes when Simmons got goal-side of Sam Thompson and headed home at the far post.

Dave Ward levelled it up in the 65th minute, sliding in at the far post following a splendid throughball by Thompson. And 10 minutes later the match had swung full circle as Dave Carey converted a Mark Funnell pass.
