Sidley romp to cup win

A STUNNING second half performance saw Sidley United romp to a 4-1 win away to Shoreham in the RUR Charity Cup.

Three goals in the final quarter of an hour overturned a half time deficit to book a third round meeting at home to Broadbridge Heath or Eastbourne United Association in a competition where they reached the final last season.

Joint manager Andy Laskey said: "First 25 minutes we were useless. We looked a bit lethargic but second half we were very good. Wes Tate started up front and he had a very good game. Every time he got the ball we looked like doing something. He looked hungry, wanted the ball and just ran at them."

The early part of the game was played at a slow pace which suited the home side down to the ground and was probably the reason why United struggled to get going.

A 10th minute strike by Mackenzie from the edge of the box was a shock to United's system. Gradually they woke up though with Kevin Rose twice going close while Freeman and Dave Ward almost found the target.

A half time dressing down from the management team had the desired effect as within three minutes Tate tapped home Jimmy Watson's parried shot after the pair had exchanged passes.

Dave Ward then timed his run to perfection to convert an inviting cross from youngster Lee Fletcher.

Mark Lynch blasted in a stunning third via the crossbar from 30 yards and Ward tapped home to round off the scoring.

Sidley entertain Sidlesham at Gullivers in the third round of the John O'Hara Challenge Cup on Saturday October 11, kick-off 2pm.
