Sidley miss out on deserved win

SIDLEY got their new Sussex Division Two cricket season off to a good start with an encouraging performance at Preston Nomads.

Only a staunch last wicket stand denied them the win they deserved.

Batting first, Sidley declared on 246-4 with openers Peter King (62) and Jonathan Haffenden (92) sharing a stunning stand of 124. New signing Imran Javed chipped in with a brisk 57.

The Pakistani all-rounded then ripped through Nomads' top order to leave them tottering on 19-4. David Smith steadied the ship with 43 and the home side did just enough to hold on for a draw, finishing on 104-9.

Sidley captain Scott Woodroffe admitted he couldn't quite believe how well it went. He said: "It was brilliant. It was a really good way to start the season. It was a really good all-round performance. The fielding was particularly good as well.

"The word will get round the league that I don't think we will be as much of a pushover this year. But I don't want to get too carried away with it. Mid-table is about where we should be looking for but if we keep playing like we did on Saturday who knows what's going to happen."

Sidley entertain Littlehampton on Saturday May 10.
