REBELS MAKE IT BEST OF SEVEN

REBELS EARNED a final 12th place on Saturday with a sunnily entertaining flourish of superior team football to that of their Middlesex adversaries whose season they ended with a fifth straight defeat.

Both sides came to the kick-off with little daylight between their goals scored and conceded but Worthing's totals in the 70s, compared to Staines' in the 50s spelt out a statistical likelihood that they would outscore their opponents.

This victory enabled Worthing to capitalise on a defeat for Windsor & Eton to move back up for the first time to the placing they occupied at the turn of the year. Ironically, Windsor had also lost here 4-3 in March to a Worthing side gaining in confidence and starting a degree of consistency which has brought them only one defeat in their last eight home games.

Worthing still wobble and worry at the back, however, and had it not for their ability to score goals, they might have lost. They went 1-0 up, then 2-1 down, yet equalised immediately. Then led twice with two of three penalties awarded in a match which also included, for Staines, a sending off and a stretchering-off.
