Rain Rules Out EP Comeback

A VITAL victory for Chichester over East Preston on Sunday gave them a 12-point lead at the top of Division One from a match abandoned after 13 ends owing to rain.

Chichester led 43-39 at that stage, with an interesting finish still in prospect.

Brian Talmage led Bob Austin by a shot, Mick Page was 13-10 up on John Dicker and Brian Wellsted was ahead by 11-7 against John Holt. Eric Pidgeon had turned the tide 12-8 over Colin Knight, but the conditions brought a halt.

EP had beaten Norfolk 80-59 the previous day. Dicker, Pete Walden and Jon Clear won rinks for EP, Ron Johnson defeating Pidgeon 19-15 in reply.

Norfolk, with rink wins for Johnson and Ron Smith had just defeated Crablands 76-66, Crablands also going down to Pavilion 80-74.

Alec Vickers, Terry Fitzgerald and Don Elliot were in charge for Pavilion. They had earlier beaten Field Place 86-76, but had to rely on a 27-12 success for Dave Thomas for that victory.

Division Two leaders Hotham were whitewashed 105-59 at Aldingbourne Gordon Lester starred with a 33-12 win over Lenny Corne.

Aldingbourne followed that up with a 78-68 reversal at Witterings, who then went on to overturn Maltravers 84-67.

In the C&M Trophies League, Norfolk clean-swept bottom club Pagham 40-37, before being upset 43-35 by East Preston, who remain second, behind Chichester who defeated Middleton 45-39.

In Division Two, Bognor gained only their second win of the year with a 38-28 success over Hotham, while leaders Storrington beat Arundel 46-32.

In the challenge match at East Preston, the Gazette League beat the C&M 137-105. Bob Austin, Brian Talmage, Nigel Welburn and Brian Wellsted won for the guys and the gals had Jenny Hamilton and Tina Phillips to thank for their successes.
