Mixed start for Westfield

THE opening week in the new Sussex Football League season produced plenty of highs and lows for Westfield.

The Westies got their Division Two campaign off to the perfect start with an impressive 1-0 win over Shoreham at the Parish Field.

The only goal came 20 minutes from time when James Carman struck after Andy Moore had hit the crossbar. He also had an effort ruled out for offside in the first half.

"I think that's a really good win for us," said manager Steve Johnson. "They had a lot of new players from last year and I believe Shoreham will be one of the best sides providing they keep the players they've got."

Westfield were brought crashing down to earth just three days later when they were hammered 5-1 away to Crowborough Athletic. Former Hastings United midfield James Body hit four goals in the rout, while Sam Jamison grabbed what proved a consolation.

Their cause wasn't helped when goalkeeper Peter Newstead had to pull out with a rib injury in the pre-match warm-up.

Westfield are on their travels on Saturday August 21 when they visit Steyning Town.
