Meet a very special colt with a bright racing future

MEET a very special colt, who is set to make his mark in the racing world. This two-year-old is the first offspring of one-eyed racehorse Material World, who captured many hearts during her National Hunt racing career.

The mare, trained by Suzy Smith at Lewes, and owned by her father Robin, overcame her disability and won five excellent races, as well as being placed in another 11. Material World is renowned as an inspirational mare of outstanding courage who never gave up in a race.

Currently known as ‘Ollie’, the colt was sired by Ascot Gold Cup and Irish St Leger winner, Kayf Tara and he celebrated his second birthday in style on Sunday at Suzy’s racing stables. He already has his own website - Ollie’s World and is owned by 16 dedicated equine enthusiasts, known as Material World Racing Club- for which a 5 per cent share may soon become available.

He will soon undertake his first spell of work as Suzy Smith oversees his racing career. Ollie will spend two months at Lewes to introduce him to work and then go back to Overbury Stud in Gloucestershire, where he has developed until now. He will be back in Lewes next year. He is developing well and is a very relaxed horse because he has been well handled.

Robin said: “The aim is to run him as a four-year-old in 2013. He will make a start with bumper races and go from there. Material World had some memorable performances at Cheltenham and it would be lovely to aim him at Cheltenham’s World Hurdle. That perhaps would be the dream.”

There is not only Material World’s first son to look forward to on the track, but another new racing club called Storm Force Ten is to be launched in West Sussex for those who want a stake in the racing career of her second foal, a filly known as ‘Millie’.

Shirocco was the sire of Millie, and he won prize money of more than £1.3m in a career which included wins in the German Derby, the Italian Derby, France’s Prix de Foy, the Coronation Cup at Epsom as well as the Breeders Cup Turf in the States.

Robin Smith said: “Even before our Storm Force Ten Racing Club has been launched, I’ve had people phoning me wanting a share.”

This second racing club will be run in tandem with the first, with members being kept informed of Millie’s progress.

Apart from the excitement of seeing the two youngsters develop, there’s also the small matter of Material World being covered for a third time, this time at a stud farm in Ireland.
