Lewes win but game on the line at half time

Lewes signed off at the Dripping Pan with a 86th minute goal from Craig O'Connor as Steve King's men celebrated their last home game of the season with a win over Farnborough Town.

O'Connor came off the bench to ensure his side avoided racking up its 18th league draw of the campaign.

But with neither team having anything, other than pride, left to play for this season, the game was played out in something of a muted atmosphere.

The most dramatic moments took place at half time with referee Eric Mackrell coming into the boardroom to ask for an appeal to be made over the public address system for a replacement to one of his assistants who had suffered a knee injury in the first half.

A replacement wasn't found amongst the 586 paying spectators but, the game was able to continue thanks to a bizarre twist of fate.

Not one but TWO referee's assessors had been sent to cover the game by mistake and one of these two offered to run the line for the second half, with the other continuing to assess referee Mackrell.
