Lee gets wildcard entry to Wimbledon

ANGMERING-based tennis player Martin Lee has been handed a wildcard entry into the singles event at Wimbledon next week.

Lee, 28 from Angmering, was given a free entry into the competition after he finished third in the wildcard tournament. It was only the top three who were awarded one. He has also received a wildcard entry into the doubles with partner Jonathan Marray.

It will be the first time he has competed in the singles since 2003 when he lost to Spain's David Ferrer in the first round. He has appeared in the doubles the past two years, though, reaching the second round with Ross Hutchins in 2004.

Lee said: "It's good to be going back there in the singles. I haven't played there for three years and it's nice to be back '” a very good feeling.

"I've been injury-free for a year now and am very much looking forward to it. I've always played well there in the past."

On the draw, which takes place tomorrow (Friday), left-hander Lee said: "I don't mind who I get. I'd prefer not to get a big name in the first round but there's not point stewing over who you are going to play.

"I've played Pete Sampras and Tim Henman there in the past so I have had a couple of big draws."
