LANCING ARE HIT FOR SIX

WEALDEN'S emphatic start to Saturday's game at Lancing saw the hosts rocked with three quick-fire goals in the first 15 minutes ending the game as a contest, before it had hardly begun.

After Darren Gearing's eighth minute 25-yard rasper that thumped home off the upright Lancing never cleared their heads. Four minutes later the visitors doubled the lead when Bobby Godfrey showed the defenders a clean pair of heals before chipping the onrushing Lancing keeper James Everett.

As if this start was not bad enough, number three arrived just two minutes later. A huge clearance from Wealden keeper Gareth Clarke totally eluded the Lancing backline giving Dan Merry a gift of a third goal.

The Lancers required a piece of good fortune to get into the game and this duly arrived on 22 minutes when referee Shaheem Kamaldian decided, for reasons only known to himself, to blow his whistle as Wesley Lopez's corner arrived in the box.

As the players of both sides stopped, Lancing defender Mike Riley headed home and to everyone's amazement the goal was given. This sent the Wealden players into a frenzy of anger around the ref, but he was not to be swayed, giving the home side a much needed leg up into the game.

Lancing then came forward and wasted two gilt edged chances to equalise before the break. First John Rhodie was sent clean through by Ian Costello only to shoot tamely at Clarke, before Dean MacDonald's brilliant defence splitting pass sent Costello in on goal but he could only blaze over when well placed.

As the second half progressed the next goal was always going to be the vital one.

Both sides came out to grab the advantage and this was taken by the visitors with 20 minutes to go. Once again poor Lancing defending was to blame as Godfrey raced clear and slotted past Everett to seal the points.

This deflated the men from Culver Road and four minutes later it was 5-1. Young substitute David Oliver rounded two defenders before easing past keeper Everett to slip home. The rout was completed with 10 minutes to go as another sub, Andy Johnson, chipped number six.

With two tough away trips to come at Oakwood and Pease Pottage, Lancing will need to improve defensively in order to climb the division two table.

LANCING: Everett; White, Riley, Crush, Etteridge; Miller, MacDonald, Rhodie, Lopez; Costello, Mtambara. Subs: Henry (White 60), Nash (MacDonald 60), Lester (Costello 75) Aylwood .
