LANCERS HUNTING FOR WICK SCALP

LANCING go into their attractive home clash against second-placed Wick this Saturday on the back of two victories that have taken Lancers to 10 wins in their last 13 league starts and fourth place.

Manager Mark Cox said: "We beat Crowborough recently and it would be nice to turn over Wick then Shoreham so we can say we've done the top three '” because that's the way I think it'll finish."

Dean MacDonald and James Hannah look certain to return from injury and Wesley Lopez has an 85% chance.

Lancing unglamorously ground out a win last week over Westfield which Cox thought some Lancing fans grumbled about because of improved expectations. He asked: "Do they want us to be the prettiest team in Division 3?"

Left-back Paul Ettridge, pushed into midfield, grabbed his first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead. Richard Lester, who set it up, retired with what may be a career-ending muscle rupture.

And if Westfield's equaliser was out of the blue, Lancers' winner was too. Gary Peters' lofted ball was expertly controlled by Adam Burton, enabling him to beat his man and score.

And that skill on the end of a Keith Mtambara lofted ball got Burton his first of two goals on Saturday, a 1-1 equaliser at Peacehaven. Rob Partridge, in his first Lancing start, soon made it 2-1 but it was 2-2 at half-time.

Burton followed up to grab his 19th of the season to avert what would have been a headed back-pass own goal with 25 minutes to go. Then keeper James Everett, to blame for both Peacehaven goals, atoned brilliantly with a late save worth two points.
