Horsham stars to compete in biggest table tennis event since London 2012

Crawley & Horsham League Junior champion Daniel Pound and Sussex cadet champion George Hazell, both from Horsham, are getting ready to compete at the highest ranking table tennis event in England since the London 2012 Olympics.

The Heritage Oil Open takes place at K2 in Crawley on the weekend of July 5 and 6.

The 200-strong entry includes the English, Welsh and Irish Commonwealth teams in preparation for the Games, which take place later in the summer in Glasgow.

The English team includes the number one seed in the Men’s event, Liam Pitchford, who has a world ranking of 56 and is rated number four in the world at under-21 level.

Also competing will be Paul Drinkhall, who is 82nd in the world and who recently won the Major World pro tour event in Spain.

Other major stars competing include Adam Pattantyus (86 in world) and Petra Lovas (76 in world) from Hungary, plus Galia Dvorak (90 in the world) from Spain - all of whom competed in the London 2012 Olympics.

The organisers are also delighted that Fangxian Yi, a former China National team player with a world ranking of 44 will be making the trip from China to play.

The men’s and Women’s Open events will take place on Saturday July 5 up to and including the quarter-finals, and the semi-finals and finals will be played at BT Sport studio, London on July 7. Entry is free at K2, support welcome.
