The club have six juniors who are at the level where they can compete in the league and all at the club wish them every success for the coming year.

The juniors now have their own organiser, Gordon Weller, who has played at the Selsey club for some time and is the husband of Alison, the ladies’ captain.

Juniors will be coached by Gordon, Matt Hurst, and Gary Hughes, the club’s professional. An open day will be held for boys and girls to visit the club and meet them on Saturday, March 28.

Matt and Gordon have strong ties with Selsey FC, Matt having played as a young boy and an adult for the club. It is hoped more young players will come along from the football club, from across the Manhood peninsula and beyond to try their hand at golf.

It’s a sport that can be enjoyed for life and offers untold opportunities to all level of players.

Selsey GC’s year has started as last year finished – hit by wet weather. Many of the weekly competitions have had to be cancelled and despite the huge effort by the groundstaff, the course has had to be closed on numerous occasions.

The Gunning Jug was played and this year was even more poignant as it was played in memory of Nigel Gunning, who passed away early last year. The winners this year were the Golf Club 8-3.

Competitions start in March for all sections of the club. Several social occasions will be held during February and March. The club captains’ cheese and wine evening and the ladies’ captain’s coffee morning are among events.

After rain, rain and more rain, but eventually Chichester’s golf course was open and ready for play.

Chichester vets welcomed brief rays of sunshine while sloshing around underfoot with a new team game.

In groups of three they played the team Stableford waltz. Explaining it proved almost as difficult as playing it.

Playing 18 holes, each team must elect six holes where one player’s score only is credited; six holes where two and six where three must count.

When all the golf had been played and calculations done, the winners were Roy Chandler; Paul Hills and Alan Jackson, who scored 84 points.

COWDRAY PARK

Below a blue sunny sky, a blanket of mist covered Easebourne and surrounds for the start of the Cowdray seniors’ February Stableford.

The early starters of a field of 89 had to keep a careful eye on their tee shots as visibility was reduced. The later starters benefited as the fog cleared to leave dry bright conditions.

The winner of division one was Stephen Henley with a great score of 40 points, creditable particularly as he was one of the early starters. Second was Mike King, with a good score of 38.

The winner of division two was Brian Anderson with a score of 37 and second was Bernie May with 34, on countback.
