Steyning back in business with late winner at Seaford

And their winner arrived in the 94th minute when Mo Shug’aa scored his second penalty of the game - despite missing his last two spot kicks prior to this match.

Suter was not only impressed with the performance given how long they hadn’t played for, but was also delighted to see his side end a barren run of seven games without a win.

“Our last game was December 14 and yes I was worried about our fitness because not only have games been off but training has been very difficult as well,” Suter said.

“Seaford had also played on the Tuesday so I was delighted with the three points and we played some good football at times on a very heavy pitch.

“It’s our first win in eight games, we’d had five defeats and two draws in that run so it was getting desperate and our fitness levels weren’t as good as they should have been.”

Hosts Seaford took the lead through a stunning strike from Lee Barnard before Adam Burton was tripped in the box just before half-time, Shug’aa scoring from the penalty spot.

Ben Greer then netted his first Steyning goal on 55 minutes but this time Seaford came back to level through Rob Jones.

When Shaun Skipper had a goal ruled out for offside a draw looked a certainty, but deep into injury time Shug’aa was tripped in the box.

“I didn’t want him to take it but he grabbed the ball and wouldn’t let anyone else have it,” Suter said. “I don’t believe the same player should ever take two penalties in a game because it gives the psychological advantage to the goalkeeper.

“And his penalty hit the underside of the bar and bounced down but luckily bounced up into the goal, it was all a bit fraught at the time.”

Steyning moved up to seventh in the Division Two table with this victory.
