Rye upset higher grade Worthing

Rye United’s remarkable season continued with a deserved victory away to higher grade Worthing on Tuesday night.

Sussex County Football League Division One high-flyers Rye won 3-2 away to Ryman Division One South side Worthing in round three of the Sussex Senior Cup.

Three days after reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Vase, Rye dominated the first half and could have been four-up by half time in this last 16 tie.

As it was they had to settle for two. Duncan McArthur put them ahead with a free kick around the wall and Danny Leach rounded-off a lovely move for his 15th of the season.

Worthing pulled one back, but Matt Maclean soon restored Rye’s two-goal cushion after some silky footwork by Danny Ellis. Worthing again got within one thanks to George Gaskin’s second of the night, yet Rye held on.

Rye’s reward is a quarter-final tie away to Eastbourne Borough or Rustington. The final will be the first match to take place at Brighton & Hove Albion’s new Amex Stadium.
