Gray hits a double in win at Selsey

A BEN Gray brace moved Littlehampton Football Club back into second place in County League Division 1 on Tuesday evening as they won 2-1 away to Selsey.

Gray netted twice in the opening half-hour to set Golds on their way to victory and, although the hosts pulled a goal back through Matt Wood in the latter stages, Littlehampton saw out the final ten minutes comfortably.

Golds manager Mark Bennett admitted it was far from a sparkling display from his side, but it was more a case of job done.

He said: “It was three points basically, but not a great performance.

“I am pleased with the three points but not particularly the performance, although all the lads were blaming it on the pitch afterwards.”

Gray fired his side ahead within just five minutes as he slotted home after Scott Packer had made a good run out wide and delivered a teasing cross.

Gray added his second just before the 30-minute mark after again combining well with Packer. The winger, after another run, again crossed for the front man to tap home his seventh goal of the season.

Golds had another couple of chances before the break, but had goalkeeper Jon Hendrick to thank for their 2-0 lead at half-time.

The stopper made a fine save from a corner just before the break.

Selsey looked as though they would pile the pressure on in the closing stages after Wood poked home after a goalmouth scramble on 78 minutes.

But Golds camped out in the Selsey half for the final 12 minutes, without creating any chances, as they restricted their hosts from breaking forward.

The result piled more misery on an out-of-form Selsey, who despite sitting mid-table, are now without a win in eight matches.
