FOOTBALL: Rebels stay top

WORTHING Football Club stayed top of Ryman Division 1 South after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Whyteleafe in a blustery afternoon at Woodside Road on Saturday.

Jamie Brotherton headed home the only goal of the game on 79 minutes to seal all three points for Rebels.

After suffering a 4-0 thrashing at home to local-rivals Bognor on Tuesday in the Isthmian League Cup, three points was the perfect response from Simon Colbran's side.

Colbran said: "It was always going to be difficult with the weather and windy today, but it was great to bounce-back like that.

"Although I did expect us to as I would never have anyone in my side who didn't give 100 per cent.

"Jamie doesn't score many headers but that's put him into double figures for the season, he's been brilliant."

It was a fairly subdued first half as both sides battled against the wind. Alan Mansfield pushed Mark Hammond's free kick onto the bar and post after 16 minutes.

Both sides missed a golden opportunity before the break as Leafe's Steffan Ball blazed over the bar before Gavin Gordon side-footed just wide when one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Leafe then had a goal disallowed after 53 minutes as Ball tapped home a cross from close range but he was flagged offside.

Brotherton headed home the winner at the back post with 11 minutes remaining.

Brotherton started the move laying off Brett Patton, he found Luke Denton wide on the right, who crossed for Brotherton at the far post.
