FOOTBALL: County League round-up (May 13)

ARUNDEL Football Club drew their final County League Division 1 game of the season 2-2 at home to St Francis on Friday.

That meant Mullets finished the campaign unbeaten in six matches to finish twelfth, but manager Richard Towers still described the season as a "major disappointment".

A woeful first-half performance left Mullets 2-0 down at half-time. Geoff Pitcher opened the scoring on 20 minutes before Matthew Carruthers got the second on 30 minutes.

Arundel were a different side after the break, as Matt Axell pulled one back on 75 minutes when he cut in and angled a shot into the far corner.

Mullets then battered St Francis in search of an equaliser but shots were blocked, headers cleared off the line and the post was struck.

Josh Biggs then headed over from close range, before Howard Neighbour eventually saved the day on 89 minutes, when he smashed home from 18 yards.

Towers said: "There was some talk of us going down a little while back, but it was never from us. We were confident we could get the results, but it was a case of when they would start coming.

"It has been a disappointing season as a manager. As runners-up last year, nothing less than top three was our aim. I know the players are very disappointed as well.

"Our second half performance, we looked good as opposed to how shocking the first half way. Maybe we started with a bit of complacency. It has been the story of our season as, no disrespect to St Francis, but we have always been able to raise our games for the bigger sides and struggled against the teams that are lower down."

ARUNDEL: O'Connor; Sneller, Pickford, Walker, Hall; Tewsley, Grove, R.Biggs, Axell; Neighbour, J.Biggs. Subs: Williams (Walker 10), Tipper, Griffiths.

Clymping ended their season with a 2-1 defeat at relegated Steyning Town last Wednesday.

Steyning created the better chances throughout and went ahead on 38 minutes when James Pargeter netted.

Clymping's best opportunity came when Jan Miller just failed to get on the end of Alex Biggs' cross.

Town levelled with 20 minutes left when Tom Bunting turned home Billy Rayner's cross, but within a minute Clymping had regained their lead when Ali Nani headed home.

Clymping player-manager Dominic Di Paola said: "We struggled for a team and it was just one of those games.

"They deserved to win and were really up for it. It's been a pretty good season for us, though. We'll try to push on next season but finished 20 points behind the champions, which is a big bridge to gap.

"The second half of the season has been enjoyable after the first half was pretty horrible.

"Our biggest problem has been a lack of depth and we probably need to get five new players in for next season."

CLYMPING: Paice; D.Di Paola, Hand, Young, Biggs; Gaskin, Rayner, Brown, Ghent; Bunting, Miller. Subs: Browne (Hand 45), Mayhew (Miller 60), Oakley.
