EP ARE ON THE UP

EAST PRESTON will be playing Division One football again next season. They earned a well-deserved return to the top flight, just one year after suffering relegation.

Saturday's promotion-decider at East Court could have gone one of two ways. It might have been a nervy 0-0 draw where both sides were too frightened to let anything go, or a thrill-a-minute, mistake-laden 4-3 result which would have used up plenty of notepaper.

Instead, the 469 crowd the highest County League attendance I have been part of were treated to an entertaining encounter, in which the worry of the final outcome appeared not to matter.

At kick-off, the possibilities were clear. A draw would suit EP, but East Grinstead needed to win, in order to nudge Vic Short's men out of third spot.
