Russell targets three more wins

Chris Topp’s side achieved its third win out of 10 at bottom club Stirlands last weekend, but remains seventh because Goring By Sea and Glynde & Beddingham - the two teams immediately above Bexhill - triumphed as well.

First team manager Hamish Russell said: “From our point of view I suppose it’s a shame that Goring and Glynde did so well, but if we can win three more games before the end of the season, we’ll be there or thereabouts.”

All teams will naturally feel they could have more points than they actually do, but Bexhill would be second had they beaten Lewes Priory in a game they were on top of when it was abandoned after an opposing player momentarily stopped breathing and taken one more wicket against Goring two weeks ago.

Having lost just one of their last five fixtures, Bexhill will travel to third-placed Haywards Heath tomorrow (Saturday) eager to make amends for a five-wicket defeat at home to the mid-Sussex outfit in early May.

“We’re very disappointed with the way we played against Haywards Heath at our place,” continued Russell. “This is a chance to go up there and put it right. They’re going to be favourites, but we’ve got absolutely nothing to lose and we can be really positive.”

Bexhill, who have lost to all of the top three but none of the bottom seven so far, will be without the influential Johnson brothers due to a family event, although Callum Guest should come back in.

Russell added: “We don’t have Malcolm or Shawn which will make our life a lot harder, but the people coming in have done really well. James Vaughan is a proper first team cricketer.”
