The under-sevens squad, comprising Cassian Clarke, Conor Stretch, George Joyce, Archie Wood, Louis Wheelhouse and Adam Halligan, secured a place in the final at the Sussex west rugby festival hosted by Chichester in March.

Then they all travelled with their families to Crowborough RFC to compete for the county shield.

There were only three games between them and winning the title.

The first game was against Haywards Heath. The first half saw end-to-end tries, making it 4-4 at half-time. The second half was evenly matched with Haywards Heath managing to score a last minute try, winning by a narrow 7-6.

Next Bognor faced Heathfield Warriors. Again it was end-to-end, with Bognor eventually winning 12-10.

The final match was against Brighton. Half-time saw Bognor ahead at 6-3 and they continued to display their skills in the second half managing a comfortable 10-7 win.

Haywards Heath had won all their three games, making them county winners. Bognor were runners-up, claiming the silver trophy.

Proud under-sevens coach Darren Wheelhouse said: “It was a magnificent achievement, bearing in mind no Bognor rugby team have ever reached the county finals.

“Well done to all the kids – they were extremely shattered by the end of the day and couldn’t wait to get their sausage and chips afterwards.”

The youngsters’ success will be celebrated at the annual Bognor awards ceremony on May 10.
