Battle star Gedye takes 10 wickets

Mike Gedye took all ten wickets as Battle tore apart reigning East Sussex Cricket League champions Barcombe.

Most of the club records were destroyed in the pavilion fire of a few years ago, but it is thought that this is the first time any Battle cricketer has achieved the full house.

Gedye said: "It didn't really sink in until a bit later on, but it was really good. There was a lot of luck involved. It was one of those days where everything has to go your way, catches being held and lbws given.

"I was just trying to bowl line and length, I didn't do anything special. I think I've bowled a lot better for six wickets. When I got to nine I thought there was a chance (of getting 10), but I didn't really think about it."

Barcombe won the toss and took the aggressive decision to bat first only for an outstanding spell of bowling from Gedye to soon put paid to their plans as he picked up all ten wickets for only 44 runs from 14 overs as they were all out for 92.

In reply, Battle raced to their modest target in only 17 overs, although there were a few signs of the Battle batsmen's ability to contrive to lose their wickets with five men being dismissed.

Predictably, Gedye ended up top-scoring with 26 not out. Auckland born and raised Gedye has handed over the captaincy to Carthew this year as he plans to go travelling for the final third of the season.

A full report will appear in Friday's Battle Observer.
