A 19 year old youth has been arrested following a vicious assault in an Uckfield filling station.

The attack happened at 7.40pm on Sunday at the Esso Garage in Bell Farm Road.

A group of men came into the petrol station, one of whom demanded phonecards from the male cashier.

The cashier refused to hand anything over and was punched and kicked by one of the group. There were other customers present at the time, and police have asked them to come forward with information.

The attacker is described as white, aged 21 or 22, 5ft 8in, of slim build, and with short cropped fair hair. He was clean shaven and wearing a light coloured t-shirt, jeans and a black baseball cap.

The cashier was badly shaken but did not require hospital treatment.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 0845 60 70 999 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

DC Richard Bebb said: 'This was a nasty attack. We would like to hear from anyone who was in the garage or close vicinity at the time.'

On Thursday a 19 year old local youth was questioned and released on police bail.
