Worthing beach's lethal weapons

LETHAL metal spikes and used shotgun cartridges were found on Worthing beach when environmentalists attempted to clean it up.

John Hughes, one of the volunteers, said: "Having lived close to Worthing beach for more than 50 years, I thought I knew what to expect. How wrong I was.

"Not only was there the usual unmentionable items, but we also found thick clods of heavy oil, broken bottles, cans and something akin to a man trap."

Rubbish filling 15 bin bags was removed from the beach on Sunday, April 22, between the pier and Western Place, but the volunteers felt they had only scratched the surface.

The event was part of Earth Day, in which 170 countries took part, and was organised by film maker Nicola Peel.
