Wormholes, Blackholes, and travelling back in time

Pupils at St. Richard's Catholic College have been continuing to enjoy an enriching range of extra-curricular activities organised by the Science department.

A group of St. Richard's pupils took part in a SEPNET (South East Physics Network) video conference on "Black Holes, Worm Holes and Time Travel" at the University of Sussex.

The lecture was given by Professor Jim Al Khalili. The St. Richard's pupils were fascinated by his talk about how time travel is possible according to Einstein's law of relativity and they marvelled at the ideas presented on wormholes and blackholes. Year 11 pupil, Max Maher, was presented with a signed copy of the book which accompanies the talk. Max was judged as having asked Professor Jim the best question on the day.

Georgia Lea, a year 10 pupil, summed up the day: "It was an incredible experience and we had time to talk to some of the physicists at the university. We all thoroughly enjoyed the trip and would like to thank all the teachers that made it possible."

Additionally, pupils from all year groups set off on a Saturday day trip to see the wonders of the Natural History Museum in London. They enjoyed the chance to explore the many fascinating exhibits on offer.

The dinosaur exhibition was especially popular with the pupils as were the many other halls exhibiting examples of all manner of life on Earth, particularly the Mammal Hall. Equally popular were the numerous examples of rocks and minerals on display especially the valuable examples contained in the Vault which also contained extra-terrestrial rock samples. Ellen Stickland, a year 7 pupil, said: "I really enjoyed the Natural History Museum. It was a great day out and I learned a lot about the evolution of man and about natural disasters."
