Work begins on 1066 memorial

Work has begun to build a new sculpture which has been commissioned to mark the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

The sculpture, which will depict a Norman soldier on horseback being attacked by a lone Saxon - an opening scene from the battle - is expected to be installed on the roundabout at the top of Battle High Street in the autumn.

The statue, which is being crowdfunded to the tune of £41,000, is being created by renowned Kent-based sculptor Guy Portelli.

Guy has been working with local craftsmen in Sedlescombe to build the body of the horse.

Battle mayor David Furness is spearheading the campaign to bring the ‘people’s monument’ to the town.

He said: “I’m delighted work has now commenced on the production of Battle’s war memorial.

“The sculpture has an important role to play, not just in marking the historic battle of 1066, but all conflicts since.

“The horse played a decisive role in delivering the balance of power to the Normans on the battlefield in 1066.

“It’s fitting to see it being used symbolically here to honour all animals killed and injured in the line of duty, then and since.

“I’m particularly pleased that the production of the horse element is taking place locally, at Anvil Tubesmiths in Sedlescombe.

“And I’m delighted to say we’ll see more local and community involvement as production progresses.”

However there is the small matter of getting planning permission for the sculpture before it can be installed.

Cllr Furness said: “We have one more major hurdle to climb before we can say with certainty that Battle will have its new memorial.

“We are currently awaiting the decision of the planning committee at Rother District Council which is expected shortly.

“Then it’s full steam ahead for installation on September 28 and the official unveiling on October 14.”
