Mirabella Calis had been staying in bed and breakfast establishments along the seafront in the run up to her death on January 14 this year.

Her body was spotted on the shingle opposite the Beach Deck on the seafront by walkers who raised the alarm.

In the days before her death she had been staying at The Beach Front on Royal Parade and owner Kristian Hayter said the 75-year-old had been trying to give away her possessions and often spoke about visiting Dignitas in Switzerland.

An inquest at Eastbourne Town Hall on Thursday (July 29) heard Mrs Calis had three children who lived in America.

East Sussex coroner James Healy-Pratt said, “It’s clear Mrs Calis had issues with her own mortality and clear she had suicidal thoughts.

“On the balance of probability this lady did go into the sea with the intention of ending her own life.”

The coroner returned a verdict that Mrs Calis had taken her own life.
