‘Shrove’ means being forgiven for wrong-doings and many people still celebrate by making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday which this year is the 12th February. Whilst you cannot compromise on the basic recipe of milk, eggs and flour some unusual topping suggestions include: curry sauce, poached salmon and cream cheese, cheddar cheese with chocolate spread for a real feast, before deciding what to give up for Lent.

As we move into the New Year the next celebratory date on the church calendar, following Shrove Tuesday, is Ash Wednesday on the 13th February. Beginning at 9.30 am in St Thomas’s Church there will be a Eucharist service led by David Page, with the Imposition of Ashes.

The Second Wednesday Society has its monthly meeting on Wednesday 13th February at 2.30 pm in the New Hall. There will be a talk given by Howard Norton on Jerusalem. Howard sometimes preaches at St Thomas’s Church and two years ago visited Israel with a group of members from the church. The cost is £1 members and £4 non-members and includes a homemade tea.

Winchelsea Garden Society’s visit to Kew Gardens and Kew Palace is coming soon on Valentine’s Day, Thursday 14th February. The bus will leave the Town Sign at 9 am and return by about 6 pm. This is a good time to visit as the tickets are on a special offer for clubs and societies at £25 per person and can be bought from the Post Office.

Best Reads for 2012 is an opportunity for the Literary Society members to bring something that they read in 2012, poetry or prose which made a great impression or made them laugh, to share with everyone else. The evening will also include the Annual General Meeting and on the agenda short reports, plans for 2013, election of Committee and Officers and also subs levelled at an unchanged rate of £12 p.a; plus a welcome to all and hopefully new members. Make a note in your diary to be at the Court Hall next Friday 15th February, meeting at 7 for 7.30 pm.

Winchelsea Methodist Chapel will be welcoming Angela and Roy Pepper to give a talk about their recent trip to the Holy Land. The meeting is held on Saturday 16th February at 10 for 10.30 am and coffee/tea will be available.

Winchelsea Beach

Tomorrow (Saturday) the rock n roll trio Something Else are playing at the Community Hall from 7.30 to 10.30 pm. The cost is £10 which includes a fish & chip supper and the number to contact is 01797 224820 for tickets.

There will be an evening of Bingo at the Community Hall on Wednesday 13th February starting at 7 for 7.30 pm. Families and friends are welcome and light refreshments are available.

A Winter Lecture entitled Nagaland has been organised by the Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve for Saturday 16th February at 2.30 pm in the Community Hall. The illustrated talk by David Lang concerns his recent visit to one of India’s most remote and interesting states. Admission is free and open to all and donations will be gratefully received.
