War dead will be remembered

HAILSHAM will remember its war dead on Sunday, November 11, with Remembrance Day services and tributes.

The Rev Roger Porthouse will hold a ceremony at St Mary s church from 10am to 10.50am, after which the congregation will go to the town s war memorial for the wreath-laying ceremony and two minutes silence.

At St Wilfrids RC Church in South Road, the morning service takes place between 10.30am and 11.30am and will also incorporate the silence at 11am.

Father Martin at Willingdon church conducts a special service from 10.45am with a two minutes silence, after which there will be a parade of Royal British Legion members, Scouts, Guides and a pipe band through the streets to the war memorial. In the afternoon, there will be a special service in Willingdon to remember the victims of the New York and Washington terrorist atrocities on September 11.

Leisure centres

The leisure centres in Crowborough, Hailsham, Heathfield and Uckfield will fall silent for two minutes at 11am.

Council chairman Norman Buck said Remembrance Sunday this year would be particularly poignant as the nation remembers the horrific events that took place in New York and Washington in September, and the subsequent loss of life in Afghanistan.

The Union flag will be flown at half mast at the council s offices in Pine Grove, Crowborough, and Vicarage Lane, Hailsham.

Cllr Ian Mein will be representing the district council at the Crowborough Royal British Legion s Remembrance Service, while vice chairman of the council Cllr John Vincent will be attending a Service of Remembrance in Hailsham as the council s representative.

Cllr Buck will be acting as Standard Bearer for the Buxted branch of the Royal British Legion at the Remembrance day Service at the church of St Margaret s in Buxted.
