Volunteers needed for Workers Educational Association

The future of the Bexhill branch of the Workers' Educational Association is threatened by a shortage of volunteers.

The group organises adult education classes in Little Common and Bexhill and currently is providing classes in life drawing, watercolour, art history, creative writing , practical gardening and philosophy.

Chairman of Bexhill WEA committee Alan Bulla is appealing for volunteers to help set up and organise the classes - the branch is to lose both its secretary and treasurer because of health problems and will face serious problems if these positions are not filled.

"People are not coming forward as they did ten or twenty years ago," said Allan.

"Should any readers feel able and willing to fill either of these positions, I would be grateful if they would contact me on 01424 210410."

The WEA committee is responsible for organising classes, sending information off to former students who might want to attend, and collecting payment for courses.

Allan said: "The subjects are chosen by the volunteers. We arrange where the classes are going to be held, and we have some influence on what is going to be taught, who is going to teach it, when it would be during the week, and if it is morning, afternoon or evening also.

"We also have dayschools which are three hour long lectures on particular subjects - we had one last December on Dutch genre painting of the 17th century, and another one in February about Islamic Jihadism."

There is no particular criteria for volunteers other than they are "ready, willing and able...and an interest in adult education would be helpful."
