Village bid to curb speeding traffic

Special £4,000 village signs have been erected in Wiston, near Steyning, in a road initiative by the parish council.

Meanwhile the council is urging county highway authorities to reduce the village speed limit from 40mph to 30mph.

The village signs have been placed at either end of the village in Hole Street and Water Lane. Wiston Parish Council clerk Lucinda Woodage said: “Now people will be aware that they are entering a village.

“We suffer here with speeding traffic as the village is a bit of a cut-through to avoid congestion at Washington roundabout.”

And, she added: “We also have in place a community highways scheme which we have just put in to West Sussex County Council which, with luck, will get the speed limit reduce from 40-30mph.

“We are one of only a few villages in the UK with a 40 mph limit. Traffic is a big problem and it is only going to get worse.”

She said that nearby Ashington had permission for 200 new homes to be built which would mean around 400 extra cars on the road.
