Urgent repairs needed for historic church

ONE of the most historic churches in the Horsham district faces a grim future unless enough money is raised to pay for repairs.

Wardens of St. Nicolas Parish Church, based in Itchingfield, have expressed concern after the Grade Two Star listed building received an alarming report on its condition.

The twelfth century church will need to undergo repairs to the roof, structure and drainage system, which could cost up to £100,000.

Parishioners are now seeking donations from ‘residents wanting to restore a part of our British heritage’.

Tony West, Warden for St. Nicolas Parish Church, said: “We appreciate that in this period of economic insecurity, wage freezes and job losses, this is probably about the very worst time for us to come seeking your financial help.

“However, our Parishioners have always managed to keep our church in good shape over the past eight turbulent centuries and we are confident that with your help we can continue to do so. Please accept our heart-felt thanks.”

Maurice Nicholls, of the Church Fabric Committee, added: “It’s a beautiful old building, whether or not you’re a church goer it’s just a beautiful part of British heritage and I would love for it to be here a few hundred more years.

“We are delighted that around £7,400 has so far been donated by residents across the Itchingfield Parish. This is very encouraging and I know there are still a lot more people willing to give.”

Anyone interested in making a donation should contact Maurice Nicholls on 01403 734131, or via email on [email protected]. Cheques should be made out to Itchingfieldpcc.
