Unique twist on Horsham man’s clothing range

Not too many clothing stores can boast products influenced by a combination of ‘1940s British gent, 1950s Americana and 1990s motorbike gangs’.

That is what is unique about Last Royals Club, the online clothing store co-founded by John Speed, 22, from Horsham, who is an illustrator as well as a fashion designer.

The idea for Last Royals Club was born in the third year of John’s Illustration course at London Metropolitan University, leading to him setting up the brand with friend Ed Bennett.

“I met Ed, and we had similar thoughts on fashion so we decided to form a clothing brand”, he said.

“We started a project at university about fashion design, and after that it made sense for us to work on something together, and now we want it to grow.”

Last Royals Club was established earlier this year, and influences come from everywhere - with John stating the importance of history and culture to the brand.

He said: “It is a mix of different cultures which is important, because that is where fashion comes from.

“The prints that are in at the moment take a lot of influence from history, so we have designs based on the Vietnam War and American Civil War.

“Our clothing is for anyone. We have had young people who are interested and adults who like to dress well as well.”

John and Ed have already made positive steps - their clothing can be found in the Brighton store, Loot - but John has big ambitions for the company’s future.

He added: “In fashion it takes about three to five years to become properly established. I would like people to know more about us.

“In time, I would like to run my own lifestyle store. It would be a place where you can come in and buy an outfit, and get a haircut by an in-house barber.”
