Rye area will benefit fromHollywood blockbustersays Rother Councillor

And this week the film’s location manager Christopher Moore praised the council for it’s co-operation in helping get the war-time thriller made.

Based on a true story, the film reveals the story of a World War II platoon’s efforts to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their rightful owners.

It was directed by George Clooney, who also stars alongside Matt Damon and Bill Murray. The cast also includes Cate Blanchett, John Goodman and Hugh Bonneville. As well as starring in the film, George Clooney also co-wrote and directed. Filming took place at Camber Sands, Winchelsea and Rye.

What viewers won’t see is the work that went on behind the scenes with staff at Rother District Council and at 1066 Country film office, which manages all film bookings on Rother land on behalf of the council, working hard to enable filming on location.

Locations manager Christopher Moore said: “The filming of Monuments Men in Camber and Rye was made easy and straight forward by the positive approach taken by the local authorities and council representatives. We presented them with many new challenges and each one was met with enthusiasm and solutions. It was a pleasure to film in the area and I hope to have the opportunity to return with another production.”

Councillor Bob White, Rother’s portfolio holder for culture, tourism and leisure, said: “We were delighted to be able to assist with the filming of The Monuments Men, it’s not every day you play a part in the production of a Hollywood blockbuster.

“Having such a high profile film featuring some out more beautiful scenery is a real boost for Rother.

“As well as promoting the amazing sites we have to offer to other production companies, the locations used in major films like this often become popular with tourists which could really benefit the local economy.”
