Udimore

Thanks to much hard preparatory work, mainly by Frank Langrish, last Saturday’s quiz evening in St Mary’s Community Hall went very well. It was much enjoyed by the competitors and raised £430 for hall funds.

You’re reminded that tomorrow evening (Saturday) the annual Brede and Udimore Prose and Poetry Evening will take place in the Hall, and will include a two-course home-cooked meal. For more details please ring Robert Wheeler (01797 222009) or Gary Marriott (01424 882412).

Members of Udimore Wildlife Society who are on the society’s email distribution list have already been sent details of the next meeting, on Tuesday evening, March 12, when there will be an illustrated talk by Matt Pitts of the High Weald AONB management unit, about the geology, flora, fauna and human activities that have formed the Weald, with emphasis on Udimore and the Brede and Tillingham Valleys. In these very difficult times, over 275 food banks have been set up all over the country to provide help for people who can no longer afford to buy food. There is now a food bank in Bexhill, set up by Churches Together in partnership with the Trussell Trust, which is already helping local families or individuals in genuine need throughout Rother District. It’s worth having a look at www.trusselltrust.org/foodbank-projects. The organizers would be very grateful for contributions of any tinned food within 3 months of expiry date, especially meat and fish, which may be taken to Rye Police Station any weekday between 10am and 2pm.

On a less edifying note, we recently encountered another nasty scam (which has apparently been around for some time). Having hacked into somebody’s email system, the perpetrators circulate to all addresses on the stolen address book a bad luck story of that person’s desperate plight and urgent need of funds while on holiday abroad. The appeal can sound very convincing, expressed in perfect English, but don’t be taken in!
