Trust's awards

A NUMBER of East Sussex new buildings and sensitive restorations have won Sussex Heritage Trust awards.

They were presented by the Duke of Norfolk at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, on Thursday last week.

The Commercial Award for a non-residential restoration, conversion or new build, went to the new boiler house at Harvey's Brewery, Lewes, and the Meadow Business Centre at Lower Barn Farm, Ringmer.

Highly commended were Proteus, Upper Dicker, which is a chicken house converted to offices and packaging factory; the Global Village at Sheffield Park, a farm building extension to provide specialist shops; and the East Sussex National Golf Course, Little Horsted.

The Public and Community Award for a restoration or new project which provides or improves facilities for the community went to Chailey Heritage School.

Lewes Library was highly commended.

The Landscape and Gardens Award for a reclamation or improvement scheme went to a garden at Town Place, Scaynes Hill.

Highly commended was a garden at Brittenden, Waldron.

The Small Scale Residential Award for a restoration, or new build within a conservation area went to the Red House in Southover, Lewes, for an extension to provide a music room to the Georgian property which is being restored. Jim Hatfield, of Lewes-based J Hatfield and Co, Chartered Building Surveyors, received the award from the Duke of Norfolk.

The extension was carried out by Thomas & Duffield Ltd, builders of Heathfield, with joinery by Westgate Joinery of Ringmer and with considerable advice from Mike Lea, the district council's design and conservation officer.

Highly commended in the Building Crafts Award were the craftsmen of Craig Arnold Building Contractors for The Barn, Moses Farm, Piltdown; namely Nicholas Ogden, Rob McEwen and Glynn Davis.
