Trug shop on the move

AFTER 174 years producing traditional Sussex trugs in the village of Herstmonceux, the legendary Thomas Smith's Trug Shop packed its baskets and moved to Chiddingly this week.

Staying in expensive Herstmonceux was no longer viable for the company, which was founded in 1829 by the inventor of the trug, Thomas Smith. It is currently owned and run by master craftsman Robin Tuppen.

The well-known shop and workshops in Herstmonceux village centre will be developed into sheltered housing for the elderly.

At the same time, the most famous trug maker since Thomas Smith himself is preparing to retire. Reg Saunders, 81, has worked at Thomas Smith's Trug Shop since 1970.

One of the most photographed men in Sussex, Robin reckons there are thousands of tourists around the world with pictures of Reg in their albums.

'All his friends and fellow craftsmen at the trug shop will miss Reg making their day more colourful,' said Robin. 'But at the age of 81, he deserves a well-earned rest. Meet him in the Bricklayer's Arms in Hailsham and buy him a drink!'

The new address of the Thomas Smith's Trug Shop is Pekes Farm, Nash Street, Chiddingly.

The shop and workshops can be contacted on 01825 872822 or visited on-line at:
