Tributes to campaigning former Worthing councillor

DAVID HILL, formerly one of Worthing's most prominent councillors for nearly 30 years, died in Worthing Hospital, aged 82.

Mr Hill, who was mayor in the Queen's silver jubilee year, 1977, was first elected to the former town council in 1962, and was a member of the borough council from June, 1973, to May, 1991, becoming one of Worthing's honorary aldermen in June of that year.

As a Worthing councillor, Mr Hill represented the Conservatives, Liberals and Ratepayers association at various times.

During his early years on Worthing Council, he campaigned for payment of rates to be made by instalments, committee meetings to be held in the evenings, and the admission of the public and press to committee meetings, and a mobile library service.

Free bus

He also helped introduce a free bus service for the elderly and disabled, and Worthing's first bottle banks.

Present mayor Noel Atkins, along with council chief executive Ian Lowrie, has sent a letter of condolence to Mr Hill's wife, Mary.

Mr Atkins said: "David gave many years serving the borough of Worthing, carrying out his many and varied roles with dignity and dedication.
