Tribute to Durrington ski accident man

THE devastated parents of a Durrington skier who died in a freak accident have paid tribute to their popular son.

Grant Alderman, 38, of Cedar Avenue, died on April 3, after he crashed while trying to avoid a skier who strayed into his path while on holiday in the Canadian resort of Banff.

His parents, Peter and Chris, of Roedean Road, Durrington, fought back tears as they spoke of their only son, but said they were taking comfort in the fact he died doing what he loved.

Mum, Chris, 62, said: "This was just a horrible and tragic accident, and we don't blame anybody for what happened.

"Grant was incredibly social and it is some comfort knowing he died happy because he was clowning around with his friends.

"We know his last words were, 'The last one down the slope has to buy us a beer', which was typical of him, he was a real joker."

Grant was an experienced skier and had been to the resort several times in the past. He was due to fly home the day after his death.

He was on holiday with a group of 11 close friends and in a telephone conversation with his mother days before he died, said it was the best trip he had been on.

As a keen sportsman he also enjoyed scuba diving, golf, snooker and cycling and played with Worthing football team Kronenburg FC.

As well as this, he had taken part in several triathlons and had been training to run in the London Marathon on Sunday, April 22.

His father, Peter, 69, said: "He almost certainly would have given the money he raised to a children's charity because he loved kids.

"He had so many god-children and five nieces and nephews. He doted on them all and they worshipped him '“ friends and family played a massive part in his life."

Born and brought up in Worthing, Grant attended Durrington First, Middle and High schools.

His first job was at Lloyds Registrars, where he developed a passion for IT.

After working for an IT firm in Brighton, he set up his own firm a few years ago.
