“The woman had been driving north in a grey Ford Focus and was in the nearside lane of the dual carriageway between Findon and Washington.

“A silver Kia LE car was believed to be alongside when the Focus suddenly left the carriageway and crashed into roadside vegetation. The crash occurred shortly after 5.30am.

“The woman, from Worthing, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The driver of the Kia, a 21-year-old man from Worthing, and his front seat passenger, a 23-year-old woman, also from Worthing, were both unhurt.

“The A24 was closed northbound while the scene was cleared and investigations carried out, and police would like to thank drivers whose journeys were disrupted for their patience and understanding.

“Anyone who saw what happened or who noticed either vehicle being driven shortly before the collision occurred is asked to email [email protected] or phone 101, quoting Operation Bookham.

“A 21-year-old Worthing man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed until 1 September pending further enquiries.”
