According to Southern Rail, there is a speed restriction over a 'defective track'.

Its post on Twitter added: "Please continue to make use of your normal route, but allow extra time for travel. Service delays and revisions can be expected."

Providing more information on its website, Southern said a driver reported there was a possible track defect near Drayton Level Crossing just after 2.30pm.

A spokesperson said: "Network Rail engineers are on the way to check the situation. They should be on site by around 3.30pm. Until Southern know if the track is safe for normal use, drivers are being asked to travel at reduced speeds through the area.

"A few late-running trains will need to be revised to call at fewer stations or terminate before they complete their full journeys. If so, you may need to change trains to complete your journey. Southern will still be serving all stations with some services."

Disruption is expected until 4.30pm.
