The fridge mountain

A GRAVEYARD of 70,000 unwanted fridges and freezers fills a disused chalkpit on the outskirts of Lewes.

They are there because the firm of MDJ Light Brothers are equipped to deal with them correctly under environment-protecting regulations. Because they contain dangerous CFC chemicals, the fridges require careful handling. Light Brothers have a special 2 million 'fridge eater' which takes out the CFCs so that proper recycling can take place. PICTURE: PETER CRIPPS.
