Teville Gate cinema dream revived

IT'S back on '“ plans for a new multiplex cinema at notorious Teville Gate have been revived yet again. But this time, the site's new developers could be throwing in a brand new swimming pool, too.

Developers Hanson have put together a multi-million pound package to build a cinema, swimming pool and shops on the derelict site, it was revealed to the Herald on Monday.

And according to one Tory councillor, his party could not be happier. Clive Roberts, who represents Central ward, said: "I am fully behind the plans and so are my colleagues.

"The developers have plans for a pool complex, cinema and shops and this will be a landmark development. It is in its very early stages, but the developers have put together a range of finance packages.

"I believe this development will be extremely good for the town. We need to get rid of that eyesore in the town." Copies of the plans have been given to council members and an informal meeting between them and the developers is expected to take place in the next few weeks.

Mr Roberts declined to comment about suggestions the developers have said the scheme can go ahead only if they are allowed to build housing on the Aquarena site. But he did add: "The Aquarena site will be redeveloped for the benefit of the town."

These new plans come nearly two years since original hopes for a multiplex cinema were dashed, when the then developers, Farrho, announced in January, 2003, they wanted to build houses on the site instead.

Keith Mercer, leader of the council, said: "We are behind any plans which bring a multiplex and new pool to Worthing. We listen to anyone who has ideas and the ability to bring these two facilities to Worthing.

"I am the father of a 17-year-old and I know there is dearth of activities to suit their needs. We need to have a decent water-based leisure activity and a multiplex cinema."

James Appleton, planning officer, told the Herald this week the council was in discussion with Hanson.

He said: "Hanson have confirmed it is looking at all

alternatives for the site, including any opportunities for a multiplex cinema."
