Teenager charged with rape

A TEENAGER will appear at Lewes Crown Court on Thursday charged with the rape of a 21-year-old woman over the carnival weekend.

Sarbaz Najmadeen Ali, 18, of no fixed abode, is charged with one count of rape following an alleged incident in Rock A Nore car park at around 12.30am on Sunday morning.

The offence is alleged to have taken place in a red Vauxhall Astra at the 24-hour car park.

Ali was arrested at 2pm on Sunday afternoon in Warrior Square by detectives.

He appeared before Hastings magistrates at a preliminary hearing on Monday and has been remanded in custody.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the car park or in the immediate vicinity at the time to contact them.

They particularly want to speak to the occupants of what are thought to have been a black Fiat Punto and a VW camper-type van, which were believed to have been around the car park at this time.

Det Sgt Mark Ling of Hastings CID said: "Although it was late in the evening, it was the day of the carnival procession so there may have been a lot of people still around.

"I'd like to appeal for any potential witnesses who may be able to help us with our enquiries."
